The Junior Squash Wizards are based at the Patesians Sports & Social Club in Cheltenham and is run by Gary Powell who is a Level III England Squash Coach. The Junior Squash Wizards were established here, by Gary in 1997.
The group sessions are structured according to ability not age. Skill & fitness tests are done regularly leading to a pass in the next more advanced skill level - there are 15 levels! A player's skill PB (Personal Best) & fitness PB record is kept up to date on the Squash notice board - which encourages goals to be set and helps to identify which skills need to be improved.
Group & individual sessions are held after school during the week, with a further three sessions on a Saturday. During the School holidays the afternoon sessions continue. Sessions run throughout the year.
A FREE individual 30 minute taster session, for complete beginners, can be booked with Gary, at a convenient time, any day of the week.
All equipment is supplied - you need only bring a pair of clean indoor trainers.
Many current junior & senior Gloucestershire players were taught by Gary at Old Pats Squash club, Sacred Hearts Squash & Racketball Club and
East Glos Club. Some are now coaches, at their own clubs, and a few have turned professional and are now on the PSA world tour.
The emphasis at Junior Squash Wizards is having lots of fun while learning to play to a high standard, with group and individual sessions for all ages from 5 through to adult Wizards returning to the club.
If you are searching for children's activities during the school holidays or for your children after school - look no further. We also do: Jump Rope (skipping) - Gary coached the members of the "Hopping Mad Jumping Jacks" display team. All junior players are taught Racketball (aka 'Squash 57') - which is a little similar to Tennis or Padel - but played on a Squash court with its own rules and much larger headed racket. And when the weather permits, lots of running outdoors to improve fitness and other activities such as our annual cross-country race to the top of nearby Leckhampton Hill.
